Revd Dr Carrie Pemberton Ford

Carrie’s background has been rooted in the Anglican Church and the public sector. She became a deacon in 1986, part of the first wave of women ordained in the Church of England, was a founder member and advocate of W.A.T.C.H., (Women And The CHurch), a Woman’s National Commissioner for the UK Government, and has worked steadily for many years, against systemic denial of women’s full inclusion in public life.  Her concern at the global silencing of women has engaged her energies for decades.

Carrie has worked in radio and TV production in concept development, in India, Nigeria and the UK.  Her FEBA (Far East Broadcasting Association) social awareness documentaries for FEBA, made whilst in India, established her credentials for working with THIRD WAY, and as Everywoman UK’s first ‘e-chaplain’, as a social commentator.  She has appeared on the BBC’s The Big Question, The Moral Maze, Sky TV and a range of regional documentaries. She is comfortable in front of any camera or microphone.

As a seasoned board member, Carrie has chaired UK NGO representations to the bi-annual Commission to End Discrimination Against Women held in New York, the annual NGO conference on United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime held in Vienna and numerous Public Policy panels. As a National Commissioner for the Women’s National Commission (faith communities and the voluntary sector voice to Government) she promoted BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) and Gender diversity in public office, assisting the representation of over 470 women’s voluntary sector organisations. Her work as a consultant in ‘gender mainstreaming’ and change management, has ranged across public sector bodies and NGOs including the Serious Fraud Office, the UK College of Policing, the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Red Shed initiative at Comic Relief, and most recently as a Fellow with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).


Experience:

  • Director of CCARHT Cambridge Centre for Applied Research in Human Trafficking 2009 -2018
  • Development member for Gender Budget Review across Government (WNC Commissioner) – this birthed the Mind the Gap inter-departmental reporting.
  • Established women’s maternal health programme and refounded the National Theological Training College for Anglicans in D.R. Congo, the ISTHA, (Institut Theological Anglican) – now part of the Anglican University of Ituri with CMS – Church Mission Society
  • Secondary School teacher in South India, also establishing social protection programmes partnered by Tearfund and World Vision
  • PhD in Post-Colonial Feminist theologies, from the Divinity School, University of Cambridge, publishing on ‘womanist liberation theologies’ of Africa.
  • Founding Minister for the new settlement and civil parish in Silicon Fen Cambridgeshire – Churches Together in Cambourne

She is also author of numerous reports on human trafficking for European Community-funded projects, the RENATE group reporting to Pope Francis II, the Legatum Institute, Churches Together in England, and several regional Constabularies in the UK.  Together with Lucy she has authored several liturgical pieces to assist churches understand the challenges of Human Trafficking.  She is a mother and a grandmother.
